Hungary, officially the Republic of Hungary, is a landlocked country in the Carpathian Basin in Central Europe, bordered by Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia. Its capital is Budapest. Hungary is a member of EU, NATO, OECD, V4 and is a Schengen state. The official language is Hungarian, which is part of the Finno-Ugric family, thus one of the four official languages of the European Union that are not of Indo-European origin.

Following a Celtic (after c. 450 BC) and a Roman (9 BC - c. 430) period, the foundation of Hungary was laid in the late 9th century by the Hungarian ruler Arpad, whose great-grandson Stephen I of Hungary was crowned with a crown sent from Rome by the pope in 1000. The Kingdom of Hungary lasted for 946 years, and at various points was regarded as one of the cultural centers of the Western world. The Battle of Mohacs resulted in Ottoman occupation, followed by an integration into the Habsburg Monarchy, and later constituting half of the Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy. A great power until the end of World War I, Hungary lost over 70% of its territory, along with 3.3 million people of Hungarian ethnicity, under the Treaty of Trianon, the terms of which have been considered excessively harsh by many in Hungary. The kingdom was succeeded by a Communist era (1947-1989) during which Hungary gained widespread international attention regarding the Revolution of 1956 and the seminal move of opening its border with Austria in 1989, thus accelerating the collapse of the Eastern Bloc. The present form of government is a parliamentary republic (since 1989). Today, Hungary is a high-income economy, and a regional leader regarding certain markers.

Hungary is ranked 20th globally in International Living's Quality of Life index (2010) and 6th in an environmental protection index by GW/CAN. Until recently, it was also listed as one of the 15 most popular tourist destinations in the world. The country is home to the largest thermal water cave system and the second largest thermal lake in the world (Lake Heviz), the largest lake in Central Europe (Lake Balaton), and the largest natural grasslands in Europe (Hortobagy).

Hungary Information

Hungary presents a culture that is distinct from other countries in Europe.  It is a country that is highly proud of its local culture, especially its music.  Even in this modern day, it is usual to hear folk music from renowned Hungarian musicians like Liszt, Bartok and Kodaly streaming from street establishments as you weave your way around in your Hungary car rental.  Hungary became a Christian country in the 1000, making it a great town to go on a historical tour.  The magnificent castles, palaces and churches are often highlights of a car rental holiday in Hungary.  Popular activities in the country, however, are horseback riding, bird-watching, thermal spa treatments and fishing.

Going around Hungary

The train system in Hungary is an interesting star shape.  The World War I caused this unusual transportation system; half of the Hungarian National Railway was awarded to its neighboring countries.  Intercity trains are a convenient way of traveling between major towns, but you would have to secure your seats in advance especially during the weekends as many students go out of town on these times.  You may hire a car rental in Hungary if you wish to see the remote towns.  The roads in Hungary are not as well-developed as other European countries, but driving a rental car in Hungary is not that hard as the government keeps upgrading their roads.

From the Airport

Hungary has 5 international airports but its largest can be found in the capital city of Budapest, the Budapest Ferihegy International Airport.  It is located 16 kilometers from the main area of Budapest.  An airport bus shuttles passengers between the airport and central Budapest.  It runs every 10 minutes, so you’ll likely get one as you get out of the airport.  There are international car rental companies holding office at the airport so if you want to get outside Budapest as soon as you land, you can pick up your rental car when you land and get on with your Hungary car rental holiday.

Places to See

Being one of the oldest Catholic countries in the world, it would be great to see the center of Hungarian Catholicism, Eztergom.  You better fill up your car rental with fuel because the distance from Budapest to this historical town is 66 kilometers.  Here you will see Hungary’s most remarkable basilica, Primatial Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary Assumed into Heaven and St. Adalbert.  If you wish to see medieval cities and castles, drive your rental car to the towns of Sopron and Visegrad where medieval architectures stand proud on sprawling hills.  For historical museums, art galleries and a dose of vibrant Hungarian culture, you need only to go around the Budapest capital.

Nearby Country

From Hungary, you may drive your rent-a-car across the border to Croatia, where you can choose among 1185 islands to explore.
