There is no question about the beauty of the Philippines.  Its exquisiteness attracted colonists and imperialists – Spanish, Japanese and Americans – not to mention the plenty of immigrants that made the country their home such as the Koreans and the Chinese.  Although these nationalities have amassed and destroyed a great deal of the Philippines’ riches, its natural beauties cannot be discounted.  How can it run out of beauty if it has 7,107 islands that comprise the whole republic?  It is a favorite of car rental holiday tourists because even if it can be plagued by problems of poverty, the Filipinos are welcoming, accommodating and are keen to help their foreign visitors.

Going around the Philippines

The transportation system in the Philippines varies from province to province.  In the capital city of Metro Manila, you have a choice among the Light Rail Transit, Metro Rail Transit, bus, car hire and the signature colorful jeepneys.  Public transportation in the Philippines may be complex and a hassle if you are not used to elbowing with a stream of commuters.  Car hire companies in the Philippines are a dime a dozen; going around the Philippines in a rent-a-car is a better way of seeing the country as it gives you more freedom to move.

From the Airport

In Metro Manila alone, there are three international airports that serve different airlines.  The Ninoy Aquino International Airport 1 (NAIA 1) services most international flights.  The NAIA 2 is exclusive to Philippine Airlines, the country’s flag carrier, which has flights to and from many countries across the globe.  The newest NAIA 3 services mostly domestic flights although it receives international flights from the carrier Cebu Pacific.  If you are traveling to other provinces, especially the other islands, you have to be connected by other flights although it is a great idea to see the country’s capital first.  You may have your hotel or your car rental company pick you up at the airport.

Places to See

Mapping out your Philippine itinerary may be an interesting task as there are 7,107 islands to choose from.  It is suggested that you stay for a really long time as most tourists leave the Philippines with a heavy heart because it is a place they can’t get enough of.  Start by exploring Luzon, the country’s main and largest island.  Once you have picked up your car rental at the airport, check out Manila first.  You have to see Intramuros, the oldest city in Manila built by the Spanish in the 16th century.  It has a dungeon where the country’s national hero, Jose Rizal, was thrown during the reign of the Spaniards.  From Manila, jump to the near provinces for their signature attractions – Pampanga (culinary capital), Bicol (for virgin beaches, wakeboarding and Mount Mayon, the country’s most beautiful volcano), Pangasinan (hundred islands), Baguio (summer capital due to its cool climate).  From Luzon, jump to Visayas and Mindanao by plane and go on with your tour in your Philippine rental car.  Make sure to see the following islands: Cebu (heritage site as it is the Spanish’s first landing site), Bohol (historical sites and white sand beaches), Apo Reef (world-renowned diving site), Boracay (country’s most famous beach and party place).

Nearby Countries

While there are no countries that can be accessed by car hire from the Philippines, you may continue your car rental holiday to other Asian countries by booking a flight from Manila.  Go to Bangkok for bargain shopping and interesting Buddhas; for exotic beaches, fly to Indonesia or fly to Japan for Asian quirks.
