For many years, Ibiza had a reputation as a partying capital. Holiday companies sold 18 to 30 holidays in bulk and reps encouraged their clients to drink and dance until the early hours of the morning. Unfortunately, along with the wealth that this tourism industry gained, was complaints of drunken and unacceptable social behaviour.
Although Ibiza still has an active night-life scene, the island has made a conscious effort to diversify the tourists that arrive at the airport. They want to encourage families and couples to see for themselves the beauty of the island as well as the cultural and traditional values of the locals. They have done this by building new venues and following a new strategy to attract the different clientèle that they so desperately seek. Feedback so far is encouraging with more and more families choosing the island as a holiday destination.
Attractions in Ibiza for Families
Cap Blanc Aquarium is in the Sant Antoni de Portmany region. Based in a natural cave, with walkways leading over the pools, kids can observe a variety of sea life including lobsters and stingrays. After visiting the aquarium, take some time out to explore nearby streets and avenues. The region is well known for its remarkable landscape views and vibrant sunsets.
Bike hire is a popular attraction with families either choosing to follow their own routes or sign up for a guided tour following main landmarks. Most companies have also set up their own marked routes for groups to follow. If the age of your child is not old enough to have their own bike, tandems and child seats are also available for hire.
The Can Marca is an impressive cave that always delights children who are captivated by the large stalagmites and deep, loud echoes. Reaching 14 metres high, it is estimated to be around 100,000 years old. The centre, located in the Sant Joan de Labritja region is open all year round
Young kids with a passion for speed will love the go karting centre in Santa Eulària des Riu. Once again, the emphasis is on family friendly and for those kids, who are not quite brave enough to navigate their own kart, they can join mum or dad and leave the driving to them.
The Aguamar water-park is the most popular attraction for families. Located in Playa d’en Bossa, there is a wide variety of rides and flumes for the young and adults alike. This is Ibiza’s biggest water-park and there are areas for sunbathing or simply relaxing while you keep an eye on the kids.
