San Francisco Car HireSan Francisco is a major city in California, the centrepiece of the Bay Area. It is well-known for its liberal community, hilly terrain, Victorian architecture, scenic beauty, summer fog, and great ethnic and cultural diversity. These are only a few of the aspects of the city that make San Francisco one of the most visited cities in the world. San Francicso was the centre of the 1849 Gold Rush, and is now attractive to visitors for its cool summers and openness to others. It is the 44th most visited destination in the world. People come to experience China town, visit Fisherman's Wharf, take a trolley car down one of those famously steep streets, visit Alcatraz and cross the Golden Gate Bridge. Consider investing in the City Pass if you will be cramming in the attractions in a short space of time. At $89USD per adult, you will make great savings on admission fees.

San Francisco is located on a small seven-by-seven mile (11x11km) square of land at the tip of a peninsula between the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific coast. It has a population of 815,000, but is the center of a metropolitan area of 7.1 million. San Francisco is just one of the cities which makes up the entire San Francisco Bay Area. San Francisco's neighbours - municipalities to the east of the Bay Bridge, north of the Golden Gate Bridge, and south of the city are all part of separate counties, each with their own governments and local public transportation systems.

Try our simple-to-use booking engine to compare car hire deals in San Francisco. Type in your pickup and drop off locations & other information required and we'll immediately provide you with some quotations. Whether you're after an economy San Francisco car hire, or a luxury San Francisco rental vehicle, we have the perfect deal for you. Our low cost car rentals are provided by well-known suppliers such as Avis, Hertz and Europcar, but we can often provide better car hire rates!  There are four major highway approaches to San Francisco. US 101 comes up the eastern side of the SF peninsula and is the most direct route from the south, although it often backs up with traffic. Interstate 280 is a more scenic route into the city from the same direction, but with poorer connections than 101. Interstate 80 approaches the city from the east over the San Francisco Bay Bridge. From the north, US 101 takes you over the Golden Gate Bridge.

San Francisco, the famous location of the California gold rush in 1849 has grown to be a major attraction. Its cool summers lure many and it is the 44th most visited tourist destination in the world. Well known for the attractions of Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Chinatown, it suits families, solo travellers, couples, or friends, making the large metropolis ideal for a city break.

City Breaks in San Francisco
Deciding where to stay in San Francisco can be a hard decision because the 11 districts have hundreds of hotels to choose from. Fisherman’s Wharf is a very touristy area and should be chosen if the main reason for your visit is a trip to Alcatraz Island. Russian Hill is more of an upmarket neighbourhood while the union square financial district is well known for its shopping, art and theatre establishments.

Getting There
San Francisco international airport is one of the largest in the world and it has many routes from European destinations. Getting a taxi from there to your hotel can work out to be expensive so we recommend arranging for your car hire to be waiting for you when you arrive. If you are traveling from other areas within America, the cross-country bus system frequently features San Francisco on many routes.

If you have already hired your car, you can enter San Francisco via one of three highways. The US101 takes you over Golden Gate Bridge but it is worth noting that cash booths for the toll roads are no longer open, instead an electric toll collection is used. There is also the choice to come in via the Interstate 280 or Interstate 80.

San Francisco City Pass
If you are after an action packed city break with discounted ticket prices for local attractions, the City Pass is worth investing in. The cost is 89USD for adults and 59USD for children. If you plan to visit most attractions, there is the potential to save up to 42% on entry tickets!

Economy San Francisco Car Hire - by Tim

Hey there, I am happy to comment on our hire experience. The car was nice and new, economical and had cruise control, which was good on the long hauls. The pick-up was easy - at the Hilton in Seattle. The booking process online was simple and free of hassles. And the drop-off in San Fransisco was very easy.

San Francisco Car Rental

We booked our vehicle on line in Australia, picked it up in San Francisco, drove the coast etc for four days and, following the GPS instructions, dropped it off at Los Angeles airport. Not a problem at any part of the transaction. Most impressed and very pleased with the whole experience.
